How I Learnt About Abundance
I am not much of a talker nor a writer. Give me a PowerPoint deck and I might ace it…but writing intense, serious stuff just hasn’t been my thing. Until today….so here goes…
Back in the days, when I was working full-time, living a carefree single life (what fun those days were)…never a worry about food, water, money….none of it. I worked hard and had my own money…and for those of you who belonged to the beginning of the .com era in India, you know what I mean. We suddenly saw a LOT of money! Salaries went from 5k to 50k overnight…and we bought fancy cars, fancy TVs, new phones (oh dear…that hasn’t stopped), fancy clothes, fancy alcohol…we had to be cool…that meant doing all of the above…and we worked really hard. So, of course it made sense to spend that money on ourselves…so we partied through the night and day (several times) and never really thought of what it means to save. We were careless with money. Life was great. That was true ABUNDANCE. We had everything we wanted. Who cared about 10 years from then?
Fast forward to 20 years later….many of us are probably married with kids. Saving money has a completely new meaning. We teach our children how to save water, not waste food, paper. Sure, we still spoil them with toys and gifts but our focus is on teaching them values – being careful and treating things with respect is definitely one of them. There is surely a greater power that provides for all of us. (Our family has 3 humans and 6 dogs at home. What can I say?) We have learnt to be careful with our money, our food, our water…but is it enough? We still live in the midst of abundance. We still have so so much. And we still take so much for granted.
Today, we are a few hours before a 3-week lockdown. It is going to mean something we have never felt before. Not wasting food will mean something new! Not overeating will mean something new! Not shopping unnecessarily will mean something new!
Do we have much more than we need? Will this teach us all something? Maybe all we need is a simple life, good health and a happy family…Maybe that’s what abundance means. I guess we will all find out over the next 3 weeks!
Here is my request – get up every morning, dress up like you are going out, eat a meal together, try and workout at home, say a prayer if you believe in that…most of all – Keep it simple! Keep it happy!
Stay Safe!
